Crazy Taxi: World Tour doesn’t launch until 2027 — but a lucky few could be behind the wheel as soon as September.
On Tuesday, Sega revealed that it’s holding a closed network test for the multiplayer portion of its revived Crazy Taxi, and registration has already gone live. Participants get two modes, two maps, four characters and six vehicles, each with a range of tune-up options. That’s everything on the table, and it’s a generous slice for a game still 18 months from shelves.
What you actually get to play
Of the two, Pickup Race hews closest to vintage Crazy Taxi. As many as six players “compete with each other to drop off as many passengers as possible within a set time limit, earning as much crazy money as possible,” according to Sega.
Mode number two, Cops ‘N’ Cabbies, carves six players into three teams of two and pits them against one another. Police are implied, and presumably none too pleased with anyone’s driving.
Ranked Match and Custom Match are both available for either mode.
The dates you need, written down
Testing kicks off at 5 p.m. PDT on Sept. 11 and wraps at 5 p.m. PDT on Sept. 13. The sign-up window shuts on Aug. 31 at 11:59 p.m. PDT, with registration handled through the Crazy Taxi: World Tour website.
Cross-play works between PlayStation 5, Windows PC via Steam and Xbox, and Xbox Series X.
Pay attention to the omission, though. Nintendo Switch 2 has been confirmed for the finished game, yet it isn’t included in the network test.
IHOP is canon now
A fresh trailer landed alongside the announcement, and its tone may catch you off guard. It’s subdued. There’s no Offspring track hammering away in the background — instead, a leisurely tour of the game’s West Coast map, Crazy Taxi’s interpretation of San Francisco, alongside a glimpse of some of the new fares waiting to be ferried around.
Sega has confirmed two genuine businesses in the game: IHOP and Amoeba Music. Neither appears outright in the trailer, but the publisher insists they’re there.
The Pizza Hut question
Whether Pizza Hut, KFC and Tower Records survive the trip into World Tour remains an open question. All Sega has committed to is that each location in the game will include regional retailers and restaurants.
That phrasing is revealing if you’ve watched how the company treats brands in its other franchises. The Yakuza series is stuffed with actual Japanese businesses. Should World Tour swing through Sega’s home turf, expect familiar Japanese shopfronts to be likely.
Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X will all get Crazy Taxi: World Tour in 2027. Between now and then, all that exists is a sign-up form, an Aug. 31 cutoff, and about 48 hours in September during which a small group finds out if chasing crazy money still lands the way it used to.
