A prop artist by the name of Sean Schofield put a photo on Instagram, described the gig as the “Dream job to end all dream jobs,” and then the post was gone. His profile went with it.
That’s how we know A24’s Elden Ring movie has officially finished production.
What Schofield shared was an image of a thank-you note signed by director Alex Garland and producers Allon Reich, Matthew Penry-Davey, Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald and Charlie Reed. The note rested on an Elden Ring-branded backpack, beside a keychain shaped like a clapboard — standard wrap-gift fare from a studio to its crew.
“Dear cast and crew, thank you for your incredibly hard work on Elden Ring. Your skill, dedication, and all-round professionalism were integral in bringing this unique project to life. We wish you a well-earned rest. Thank you and very best wishes, Alex, Allon, Matthew, Peter, Andrew and Charlie,” the message reads.
Six months of blood, sweat and tears
It’s the caption that rewards a second read. “Six solid months of blood, sweat and tears making the coolest stuff ever, working alongside the best of the best. Can’t share anything else for a very long time, but I couldn’t be more proud of what we did,” Schofield wrote.
Then, mid-writeup, the post disappeared. The profile flipped to private as well. Somewhere, a phone call got made.
A very long runway to 2028
Cameras started rolling in Spring 2026. The release date is set for March 3, 2028.
Run the numbers and you get more than a year of post-production, which makes sense. Putting George R. R. Martin and Miyazaki’s world on screen will lean hard on the visual effects team, and rendering the Lands Between won’t come cheap.
What leaked in April still matters
Set photos surfaced online in April, shortly after production began. They depicted the execution of the Dung Eater and of Queen Marika, played by Emma Laird.
That points strongly toward a prequel. The events appear to be set before the game, during the period of history preceding The Shattering that broke the Lands Between apart.
Labels stuck on boxes in the background of those images hinted at the Royal Capital of Leyndell appearing, with Stormveil Castle floating as another candidate. Props glimpsed on set imply the Academy of Raya Lucaria is folded in somewhere.
A24 is not being cheap about this
Nick Offerman, Havana Rose Liu, Jonathan Pryce, Peter Serafinowicz and Cailee Spaeny make up the cast. The budget has been reported at more than $100 million.
Coming from a studio built on arthouse economics, that figure is the loudest thing about the entire production — louder even than a deleted Instagram post.
And Schofield can’t discuss it for a very long time. He said as much himself, just before he couldn’t say anything at all.
