In Brief:
- Pixels (official site) has switched on USDC support, according to founder Luke Barwikowski.
- Behind it is a payments overhaul he labelled “just-in-time purchasing,” a system that ends the practice of the game sitting on player balances inside its stores.
- vPIXEL can now be purchased outright with USDC, both in game and through the Stacked app, tightening the gap between earning rewards and spending them.
Checkout in Pixels now supports USDC.
In comments shared on X by @rmcorp, founder and CEO Luke Barwikowski connected the addition to a wider rebuild of the game’s money plumbing.

“The reason we’re able to do this is because we introduced this new feature of ‘just-in-time purchasing’ essentially,” Barwikowski said.
Stored value disappears from the storefronts under the new mechanic. “Pixels no longer stores your balances inside of these stores,” he said. In the clip as posted, his account of how payments currently operate is cut off mid-sentence, ending on “The way that payments work right now.”
What USDC buys
Stacked app users have three routes to vPIXEL: USDC, on-chain PIXEL or Stacked PIXEL. Inside the game itself, vPIXEL is available for USDC or for in-game Stacked PIXEL. Players reach the shop via an orange button at the top left of the HUD, filed under a Shop tab.
The non-tradable half of the economy is vPIXEL. Each unit is backed 1-to-1 by PIXEL, and holders may stake or spend it — but selling, trading and transferring it to other players are all off the table.
Limit Break’s ERC20c lets it travel between partner games with no transaction fees. Pulling value back out, however, incurs a farming fee of about 50%, with the proceeds redistributed to staking wallets.
Where PIXEL lands
Staking and governance are the token’s new destination. Across roughly the next year, PIXEL winds down as a reward currency, and USDC takes that role in some contexts.
The studio has also flagged a DAO for community governance, plus a Realms Scripting Engine aimed at third-party developers.
The Stacked layer
Sitting beneath all of it is Stacked, the rewards and engagement platform. What started as an internal tool now powers the flagship Pixels game, Pixel Dungeons and Chubkins, which is in early access.
Speaking to Blockchain Gaming World editor-in-chief Jon Jordan, Barwikowski called it “the culmination of everything we’ve been working on at Pixels for the last four years, baked into one product.”
Four years of Pixels operations went into the platform, along with north of $25 million in revenue and one million daily active users. Crypto-native players collect rewards in USDC; everyone else earns Stacked points redeemable for gift cards or PayPal payouts in U.S. dollars.
Barwikowski has talked about firing targeted offers at particular user segments — holding on to existing users, winning back “lapsed spenders,” and turning players into first-time buyers to raise lifetime value. In his framing, it resembles a loyalty or cashback scheme more than a crypto reward program.
Background
Founded on April 1, 2020 in San Francisco, Pixels runs on Ronin, which moved off an Ethereum sidechain to an OP Stack Layer 2 on May 12, 2026, incurring roughly 10 hours of mainnet downtime.
Over the past year the studio has shifted its focus from headline daily active adventurer counts to higher-lifetime-value users, aiming resources at the players most likely to spend and hold tokens. Pixels Pals, a pet-themed title, was pencilled in for a June or July launch, and the team has looked at partnerships with developers such as Runiverse to widen PIXEL’s utility.
The spending base is already in place. “We hit $20 million in revenue in 2024, and it’s all from in-game purchases,” Barwikowski told CCN.
